Josh Fleck Age 15 Littleton, CO |
Jake, here is a quick video of Josh this weekend. He is hitting the crap out of the ball. This one, one-hopped the fence (340'). When slowed down (frame by frame), his swing position looks really good and he really sees the ball well the ball…makes for a great combination. He was 7 for 8 two weekends ago and 3-5 this last weekend and hit over .600 in the spring. Lots of doubles, triples, and line drives… - Dave Mike's note - Here's Josh's swing sequences broken down from the clip on the left:

Joey Tomko Age 15 Blacklick, OH |
Joey played SS the entire year for Gahanna Lincoln Varsity as a freshman. He hit 11 doubles, 2 homeruns, 39 RBI, and a .370 BA in 31 games. In the regional finals against the #1 team in the state, Cincinnati Lakota West, he went 2 for 3 with a homerun and a double off the wall. He was selected first team all-league in the Ohio Capital Conference and honorable mention all-district. Thanks to both of you for all your help. He really has come a long way and the hitting technique and mental approach are all "Epstein" driven. We will try to get him a refresher this fall either in Cleveland or Denver. |

A young Mike Epstein in Tokyo playing on the
first United States baseball team (1964). The biggest thrill of my baseball career was standing on the field when they played the Star Spangled Banner before 60,000 Japanese spectators. Tears and goose bumps. I was never prouder to be an American. It even beats winning the World Series in 1972. One of my greatest wishes would be for every player to share that same magical moment. It unequivocally defines you as a person and what you have accomplished. It is also one reason why I consented to Ted Williams' request to "re-introduce" his incomparable hitting philosophy in 2000. After mentoring under him for 10 years and being designated his legatee, I have been fortunate to watch the unparalleled successes from rotational hitters all over the country. The past eight years have translated into a giant first step for the many players with these same aspirations to compete on baseball's most competitive stage. Awesome! |

"We played the top four teams
in the state in our division. Apparently you
guys have a team there that play up a year in
Majors and are rated number 1. We beat them both
games and Paul hit the game-winning RBI in the
second game with a rock-solid line drive to the
left-center gap. All in all he batted great: 3
triples, 2 doubles and a slew of RBI's. |

Mike, my son and I really enjoyed the camp you
put on in Nashville. It is really hard to
convince some area coaches that this is the
correct way to hit. We have committed to the
program and drills. My son struggled with
hitting last year; however, this year he has a
ton of confidence and his statistics show
it. His average is about .370 with a significant
decline in strike outs. Just wanted to send you
a picture of his swing, and let you know that we
are still working hard.
Thanks, |

Joey Tomko Age 15 Blacklick, OH |
Mike, I bought your program in December and I’ve made all our coaches learn your methods. We've been using your teaching process in our program so far this season and I have been pleased with the results. We are fortunate to have a player on our team that has been to your program, Joey Tomko (left). His father has a cage in their basement and has opened it to some key players on our team to work with them on their swing. They worked all winter and their results have been impressive. Those players are now helping other players along with our coaches and we are seeing results in the entire program. I still have some “projects” and progress is slower with some, but we are on our way. My dad bought me “The Science of Hitting” when I was in high school. Anyway, from Ted's book to your teaching methods, I feel like my education is complete. It’s a joy to work with my hitters and see tangible results after we work the drills, which is what we use daily before a hitter can get into the cage to hit. Thanks for taking the time to develop your methods and offering them to guys like me. You’ve made a real difference in our program. Mike Shade |

These are "before and after" clips of Shane
Ogata, an 11 year old student at our Hawaii
hitting camp (2008). Who wouldn't want their son
to look like this? Folks, NONE of our "before" clips are staged! The swings you see are the very first swings the players take the first day of camp. We video them at the start of camp - and at the end - so you can see the progress they have made. While Shane's swing mechanics are obviously better now than before, like many others who attend our camps, it is simply a "springboard" to continue refining them with good instruction. In other words, this a "start" towards "hitting his potential." |

"Mr. Epstein,
My son Jonathan (12 yrs old), is taking
rotational hitting instruction in Cleveland,
Ohio from one of your certified instructors,
Dave Kajganich.
In our second tournament of the year last
weekend, he had a bases loaded, two-out triple,
and another drive deep to left that was caught.
The day before, he had an opposite field double
over the right fielder's head. Watching him hit
for power is lots of fun.
I've attached this photo from the tournament
where he is using your rotational techniques.
Thanks for all the work you do. You've really
impacted his game.

These three consecutive
photos illustrate how quickly rotational hitters get on - and stay on -
the plane of the pitch. Another rotational hitter, Albert Pujols, has
had his swing plane measured on the pitch plane for as long as 5 feet.
Clearly, Aaron is well on his way to a productive baseball career. (Note: The red line represents the pitch plane; the yellow line is Aaron's swing plane. Learning to hit correctly facilitates matching the swing plane to the pitch plane quickly, a vital component of the good swing.) |

Jackson Holliday, 3, the son Colorado Rockies' hitting star, Matt Holliday, swinging at a pitch during spring training, 2007. We're all born with the "natural" swing! Then youngsters start playing Tee ball and are taught to swing down and watch the ball hit the bat, corrupting the laws of physics instinctively provided by Mother Nature. When the youngster becomes a teenager, he quickly finds that infielders field and throw better. Coupled with the base paths lengthening to 90 feet, the player finds that hitting ground balls produces lots of outs and has no fun. The technique he learned, starting with Tee ball, restrains him from getting the ball over the infielders' heads. Because of this early instruction, we have made soccer the fastest-growing sport in this country. To keep progressing, kids must learn how to correctly hit line drives over the infield. When you think about it, it's really unfortunate that parents now have to pay for their youngsters to learn something they were already born with. |

Konrad Schmidt Petaluma, CA 21 years old University of Nevada (Reno) |
2/12/07 San Luis Obispo, Calif. – Catcher Konrad Schmidt hit two three-run home runs and drove in seven as the Nevada(3-6) defeated Cal Poly(5-6) 10-6 in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday. Schmidt (4-for-5, 3R, 7RBI) led the Pack offense with four hits and seven RBI. All four of his hits went for extra bases: two doubles and two three-run homers. 2/18/07 Stockton, Calif. - Konrad Schmidt (3-for-4, 2R, 5RBI) was the offensive star for the Pack collecting three hits and drove in five runs in the game. He blasted two home runs (nos. 5 and 6) and his third hit was a double. (Another one of our students, 2005 Freshman All-American, Justin Baum, homered for the University of Pacific in the same game.) |

As you can see, Bob learned well while he was out here and Derrick is proof his dad did a nice job working with him! Derrick's a good-sized young man with excellent power, so we have tweaked his swing plane and body posture to help take advantage of his "plus" strength component.

Ryan Mulhern was back in for a refresher to make sure he was still in the "envelope" after an injury-plagued season in 2006. In 2005 Ryan led the Cleveland organization with 36 home runs. Here you see him only working from the No. 1 position. Batting practice is just that: PRACTICE. The hitters that keep moving up and having success are those that keep working on the proper core movements.

Over 60 years ago, my mentor, Ted Williams,
said "a hitter must stay inside the ball." The past 25 years we ignored
this hitting "truism" and preached "hands to the ball," which
contradicts Williams' keen observation. In accordance with Ted's thinking, my personal definition of "staying inside the ball" is "the hands follow the hitter's rotating body around its axis." This allows hitters to keep their bats 90° to the path of the oncoming pitch and maximizing the bat's "sweet spot."
Albert
Pujols' photo from Sports Illustrated
(left) and a drawing from Williams' book
(right), The Science of Hitting, clearly
show the parallels between Williams'
perceptions and the what great hitters
do.

The pitch was a fastball just below the belt on the inside-half of the plate. Here you see how favorably
David Towarnicky's technique (center) compares with
superstars Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants (top)
and Ken Griffey Jr. of the Cincinnati Reds (bottom).
Technique should be universal. Says Dad: "He took an MCL injury in the second game, missed two games but still led the team in all hitting categories this year. .471 BA, slugging .852. Led the team again in homeruns, RBIs, walks, intentional walks, etc. Got hit 12 times in 14 games. Was “All Big East,” “Coastal 8 Conference” (third year in a row), “All Area,” “Sun Journal All Area Baseball Player of the Year,” MVP of New Bern HS team, “NBHS Male Athlete of the Year,” and “Army award for Male Athlete of the Year.” David now holds the career record for hits, runs, hrs, RBIs, walks and BA at NBHS. “Impact Baseball” has him ranked as the 2nd ranked first baseman overall in the state. I give you and Jake my deepest and most heartfelt thanks for all you have done for him. I would love for you to see him again - if for only an hour." - Mike T. Update: David was a D-1 starter as a true freshman (2007). |

He's a big kid, but it is the rotational swing that made it all possible. We are most grateful for everything you have done for him.
